Over the years, people have had to adapt to technology. Want to find a file on a computer? Input a command on a keyboard attached to a machine. Want to make a phone call? By creating technologies that adapt to us rather than the other way around, Artificial intelligence (AI) is turning the dynamic on its head. This is the new way of interacting with computers, which doesn’t seem like computing at all. For decades, computer scientists have been working on AI technologies and we’re finally starting to bear fruit from it.
We’ve already listed some ways AI is helping is in our daily lives but what about AI’s role in business? AI software programs—especially computer algorithms, can analyze massive amounts of data to identify patterns and predict outcomes. Then there is AI software that can potentially save lives by detecting cancer early and AI software that can help thwart a cyberattack.
Some sectors pushing into AI with pilot projects include banking, retail and health. On many company websites, conversational ‘chat bots’ pop up to answer questions and improve customer service. To optimize inventories and supply chains, Walmart stores predict future demand and reordering stock by harnessing AI. Similarly, Monsanto—an multinational agro-chemical and agricultural biotechnology company, uses AI to identify the most promising molecules in bioengineering, while shale oil producer Devon Energy (DVN) uses AI to guide drilling gear.
The use cases of AI do not end there. Banks see the future of AI in detecting money laundering and fraud, manufacturers see AI as helpful in scheduling equipment maintenance and in healthcare, AI may be useful in predicting diabetes and heart disease before they develop in an individual.
E-commerce is also expected to benefit from the technology as marketers could use AI tools to personalize website content to highlight products or services that each shopper is most likely to buy and to target ads more effectively.

It is predicted that by 2030, there will be widespread availability of specialized AI technologies. However, there are some concerns about the design, policy and ethical challenges that AI will raise in the future. It is feared that the challenges of AI will be a significant problem in the future if they are not tackled now. However, the future of AI will be a great one if the design issues are solved and the policy and ethics aspects are streamlined. Following are some of the potential applications of AI in the future:
Though they are yet to fully commercialize, we are already witnessing self-driving cars wielding a change in the transportation industry. The technology enabling these cars is artificial intelligence (AI). The technology isn’t perfect yet, and it will take a few years before there is widespread use of automated cars. However, other modes of transportation such as buses and trains may be closer to full automation.
Automation of ‘Dangerous Jobs’
One of the biggest concerns of governments and private companies is the safety of people in the dangerous or hazardous jobs. Examples of these are people involved in mining jobs and bomb defusing. Today, drones are being employed to defuse bomb and perform other dangerous jobs to minimize the risk of human injury. This is partly enabled by artificial intelligence. As the technology improves, expect more AI integration to help these machines function.
From design to distribution and services, AI can make the entire manufacturing process more efficient and hence, save big costs over time. Rather than spending time making walkthroughs of entire manufacturing facilities, an operational supervisor can sit behind a computer to identify in real-time a floor based problem that arises in workflow.
Smart Shopping and Payment
Amazon Go—a partially automated grocery store operated by online retailer Amazon, allows customers to shop and leave without having to check out and make physical payments. Customers use the Amazon Go app to check in, but thereafter the entire shopping experience is designed to be automated. Sensors track which objects customers pick up and put in their basket, and Amazon accounts of customers are automatically charged after exiting the store. As the AI technology develops, such customer experiences are expected to become a commonplace.
