Drone Traffic Control.

Today’s businesses are taking advantage of drone technology and many popular companies are testing drone delivery. From Amazon and Walmart to UPS and DHL, it seems like every company is exploring the use of this new technology.  With so many companies utilizing drones, there will come a time when it is necessary to manage their traffic flow.

Don’t expect these drones to deliver your pizza this weekend, though. Some reports estimate that even in 2020, drone deliveries will represent less than 1% of the commercial drone market. This is caused by the low battery life of these machines and also logistics challenges. Today’s companies aim to take claim their stake of the market by developing plans to organize this travel.

In 2016, the Federal Aviation Administration released rules governing commercial use of unmanned aircraft systems, also known as UAS. Operational rules limit factors such as line of sight, lighting, and speed. The regulations are aimed to not only promote sustainable growth within the industry but to also protect public safety. This showed their commitment to integrating these units into the airspace of current aircraft.

The key to the advancement of this management is to create communication between these devices. Companies are working on ways to create successful software which can use real-time weather data along with the movements of other drones to create the best path. This technology must also take into account restricted airspace, manned aircrafts, and obstacles such as cell towers and buildings.

One company who stands out in this field is AirMap. With investments from companies including Microsoft, Qualcomm, Sony, and Lux Capital, this company is setting its sights on gaining a strong control of the airspace. Currently, the company’s airspace management dashboard is used by more than 125 airports. With this success, it seems appropriate that they would translate their experience into this new technology.

Although there are no concrete rules governing the travel of these drones, there are many companies working towards this goal. Pursuing this control now will lead to more sustainable growth and a more successful product. We’re excited to see not only the future of the drone industry and the possibilities it will bring to businesses, but also the logistics and regulations behind this growth.
