Business technology has been completely transformed, thanks to the unprecedented rise of the cloud over the past couple of years. From application development and management to managing tech infrastructure, remote work, and beyond, almost all business operations have integrated into the cloud. As the cloud continues to grow, it is already shaping the world of business tech in new and exciting ways that weren’t even thought possible a decade ago.

No one really knows what kind of technology the next decade is going to bring, which is why we have decided to compile a list of the 11 groundbreaking cloud technology trends on the horizon that are not only going to shape the business world but the world we live in. Here are the top predictions:

1.      Rise of the Human Cloud

There is one avenue where tech departments from all over the world are struggling with right now, and that is the talent gap. However, what they don’t know is that the same effectiveness offered to them by the cloud can also be used to secure talent. The human cloud is an emerging trend in the business-to-business sector and, according to SIA, is projecting a 22% year-over-year growth.

Currently, it offers on-demand access to an extensive, flexible, and well-measured talent pool that makes it easier to identify talent for organizations.

2.      Moving to the Edge

Cloud processing is going to continue growing, but it will mainly be for large-scale data analytics and processing. Artificial intelligence and machine learning will happen in the cloud, but more localized processing is going to move slowly to the Edge.

We have already seen it with 5G, which is going to provide much faster processing for the Internet of Things devices at the ‘Edge, where the user is and will sync periodically with the cloud for more detailed processing.

3.      Connected AR/VR through 5G and the Cloud

The rise of 5G has brought along the new promise of breakneck speeds, low latency, and high bandwidth. That is going to bring about a massive rise in cloud-connected augmented reality and virtual reality implementations.

The processing power and bandwidth that AR/VR requires is going to be met with 5G, which will allow organizations to focus on building cloud-connected and high-performance AR/VR solutions.

4.      Data Fabrics

Cloud computing is going to be one of the most important innovations in tech for decades, and it has already proven that by solving some massive problems. However, it has also created new problems, chief among them the proliferation of data and an expectation for programs to work anytime and anywhere in the world.

The next step in the technology is going to be data fabrics, which will be the future of collaborative computing, as it will break down data silos and outdate data integration projects.

5.      Workstations As-A-Service

In general, every employee is given a dedicated computer that they control 100%, but most employees only use their computer’s full capacity for some part of the workday. When the complete computing power of the organization is going to be available to an employee for short amounts of the day, individuals will manage to run complex tasks such as AI training and code compilation throughout the day to get instant results.

6.      Security-First Thinking

Cloud adoption is going to be supercharged with security-first thinking. There will be an integrated, cross-platform segmentation strategy that is going to allow secure cloud migrations and eliminate the legacy challenges of siloed solutions, data crawl, and complexity.

There will be agile segmentation of assets, and apps and functions will prevent opening up new areas of risk that didn’t exist before moving to the cloud’s expanded attack surface.

7.      The Rise of Enterprise AI

Enterprises have been slowly maturing from consumer-facing AI applications into a comprehensive, organization-wide, 360-degree AI strategy. That has increased demand for hybrid, cloud, and on-premise systems to have scalable distributed and secure enterprise AI technologies. Even emerging distributed AI standards like Dask and others are going to play a major role.

8.      Adopting Application Mobility

Even though the cloud continues to grow for enterprise customers, there is going to be a major shift towards application mobility. Most organizations are already looking to break free from siloed dependencies for a particular cloud. The ability to move applications on-demand between private and public clouds and to edge compute locations is going to be a gamechanger.

It is going to drive cloud trends, and we can already see it as public cloud companies continue to push the cloud towards the edge.

9.      Vendor Consolidation

In the coming year, there are going to be a lot of companies that will look to drastically reduce the number of disparate solutions they have and start focusing on vendors that can meet multiple needs. That will help them reduce the need for tool sprawl and allow them to achieve faster growth.

10. Blockchain, AI, and the Cloud Joining Forces

Blockchain, AI, and the cloud already enjoy a symbiotic and positive relationship, and their potential to join forces is a great cause for excitement. It will take a multi-faceted approach to next-generation cloud infrastructure and is going to produce unlimited possibilities and opportunities.

It is already being researched and applied at a small scale, and this relationship is expected to blossom and continue to grow. It will not only create networks with immense opportunities but will also create massive resources for efficiency as well.

11. Moving Analytic Data to the Cloud

More companies today are moving their analytic data ecosystems to the cloud to allow more users to easily access data faster and in a more reliable manner. The biggest benefit is the ability to load and query the same data set concurrently because of the separation of storage and compute. It will lead to faster times to market for customized customer solutions and more.
